Are you making this newbie mistake? Just stop it.
While browsing on Pinterest the other day, I came across a pin that piqued my interest on creating an email series. Once I signed up, I was shocked, disgusted and kind of pissed off when I saw the thank you page. It got even worse, when I got my email confirmation. What am I pissed about?
I’m talking about the number one most overlooked aspect of your email funnel. Your ‘Thank You’ page.
So here I am, happily checking out “the competition” (PS. I don’t believe in competition) and signing up for this freebie. When I landed on the ‘Thank You’ page, it was literally the example text from MailerLite. Seriously? You’re going to go through all the trouble to create this freebie, call yourself an email marketing expert, put it on Pinterest and not even bother to create a proper thank you page? ? Stop it.
Not only that, this person’s thank you page actually asked me for my company’s name and address? They literally didn’t customize one single thing when it came to the opt-in process.
This one seemingly harmless step has cost this marketer my trust forever. How can I trust this person to be an expert on email marketing when they don’t even bother to customize the thank you page? Even worse, the confirmation email was the default placeholder text too!
This is why you should sign up for your own freebies, especially if they are older. It’s never too late to revisit your opt-ins and experience it from a new subscriber’s point of view.
One thing I want you to remember is this: There are a TON of fakers out there. People who claim to be some kind of expert or guru but when you look just a little bit closer, the illusion of expert status is shattered. Your people NEED to hear from you.
Realize that you are worthy of being in people’s inboxes because there are fakers out there claiming to be experts who don’t even have their act together.
Be honest with your people and don’t claim to be something you’re not when you’re clearly lacking that skill.
Finally, be a professional. Take the time to test your thank you page and your confirmation email.
